classification of lipids by function

Classification of lipids by function: lipids play three major roles in the human biochemistry.

1)storage: they store energy within fat cells.
2)membrane component: they
are part of membrane that separate compartments of aqueous solution from each
other.
3)messenger they serve as chemical messengers.
Storage:
Plants
store energy in the form of starch. And animals store energy in the form of
glycogen.
adipose cell is also knowing is fat cell which store
energy in the form of fats has much greater importance for us. The reason is
simple the burning of fats has produces more than twice as much energy 9kcal/g
as the burning of an equal weight of carbohydrate 4kcal/g.
Membrane
components:
the body also need insoluble compound for
membrane that separate compartment containing aqueous solution their water
insolubility derives from the fact that the polar group they contain are much
smaller than their alkane like (non-polar) portions. These non-polar portion
provide the water repellent or hydrophobic property.
Messenger:
lipids
also serve as chemical messengers. Primary messenger such as steroid hormones
deliver signal from one part of the body to another part.
Secondary messenger such
as prostaglandins and thromboxane’s
mediate the hormonal response.
